Lithium battery water-based adhesive sets a new global record, and Green Power leads the new industry standard.
In recent years, with the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry, battery safety issues have become a hot topic of concern for the entire industry and society. Actual measurements show that lithium dendrites can melt at around 180 degrees Celsius, and the piercing of the separator by lithium dendrites leads to battery short circuits, causing thermal runaway in battery packs. This is also a significant cause of battery fires in new energy vehicles.
In recent years, with the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry, battery safety issues have become a hot topic of concern for the entire industry and society. Tests show that lithium dendrites can melt at around 180 degrees Celsius, and when lithium dendrites pierce the separator, it leads to battery short circuits, causing thermal runaway in the battery pack, which is also a significant cause of battery fires in new energy vehicles. Hunan Green Power Materials Co., Ltd., as a national high-tech enterprise focused on the research, production, and sales of water-based adhesives for lithium batteries, has been deeply exploring this field for many years. Recently, the company announced a significant achievement: its independently developed high-heat-resistant separator adhesive for lithium batteries not only breaks the technological monopoly of Japan and South Korea but also achieves a separator heat resistance temperature exceeding 200°C for the first time globally while maintaining stable performance.

Market research shows that the market size of water-based adhesives for lithium batteries has continued to grow in recent years, and the domestic market's share of domestically produced products is also expanding. In the early years, this market was almost monopolized by Japanese companies, with its main research and production capabilities concentrated in Japan. Industry statistics indicate that by 2024, the market size of China's lithium battery adhesive industry will reach 7.849 billion yuan. In recent years, with the technological upgrades of lithium-ion battery products, domestic companies have also been increasing their innovation efforts in various sub-sectors. Among them, Green Power, established in 2017, is a national high-tech enterprise, a specialized and innovative small and medium-sized enterprise in Hunan Province, and a new materials enterprise in Hunan Province, as well as a new-type research and development institution in Hunan Province. Its products have repeatedly won the "China Good Technology Award." The company has been deeply engaged in the water-based adhesive market for lithium batteries for many years, focusing on the development of green and environmentally friendly water-based adhesives for lithium batteries that have reached international first-class levels, applied in products of first-class domestic and foreign enterprises, and has achieved a good reputation in the sub-sector of lithium batteries, aiming to become a leader in water-based adhesive materials for lithium batteries.

According to the technical person in charge of Green Power, lithium batteries are composed of main materials such as positive electrode materials, negative electrode materials, separators, electrolytes, and other auxiliary materials, among which the technical barrier of the separator is the highest. Once the battery experiences thermal runaway, the separator is prone to short circuits due to thermal shrinkage, requiring a layer of inorganic material to be coated. The product developed by Green Power is the "glue"—the water-based adhesive for lithium batteries—coated between this layer of inorganic material and the separator. It is reported that the water-based adhesive for lithium batteries is mainly used to bond various components in lithium-ion batteries, such as active materials, conductive agents, and current collectors, to form a stable electrode structure, ensuring a good conductive network between the active materials and conductive agents, thereby improving battery performance. In addition, it can alleviate the volume expansion and contraction of positive and negative electrode materials during the lithium intercalation and deintercalation process, stabilizing the internal structure of the electrode, thus achieving good cycling performance.

To tackle the challenges of high heat resistance and low moisture residue in ceramic-coated separators, Green Power's technical department has made innovative breakthroughs in technology and process links by increasing the heat resistance temperature of the separator and reducing the probability of battery pack fires. It is reported that the GR-type water-based adhesive for lithium-ion batteries is formed through soap-free polymerization, featuring excellent bonding performance, uniform stability, good storage performance, low viscosity, and no bubbles or odor, making it a complete substitute for imported water-based adhesive products. It can be widely applied to aluminum and copper foils in lithium-ion batteries, especially usable on ceramic separators for lithium-ion batteries, significantly reducing production costs.

Currently, Gaorui Power's production capacity has reached 50,000 tons per year, and the sales data of its leading product, water-based adhesive for lithium battery ceramic separators, has continued to surge over the past three years. In 2023, the company's annual output value reached over 20 million yuan, with the production of water-based adhesive for lithium battery ceramic separators exceeding 385 tons, and the national market share surpassing 12%. In 2024, the company achieved another remarkable performance, with annual output value exceeding 80 million yuan and production of water-based adhesive for lithium battery ceramic separators exceeding 1,400 tons, reaching a national market share of 15%, further solidifying its position as an industry leader. From the perspective of market competition, Gaorui Power's water-based adhesive specifically for lithium-ion battery ceramic separators has a strong competitive advantage domestically. The high-end water-based adhesive market for lithium batteries in China has long been dominated by Japanese companies represented by Ruion, JSR, and Sojitz. However, the water-based adhesive GR-506 launched by Gaorui Power has already surpassed Japanese products in heat resistance and bonding strength, with product heat resistance ≥150°C, thermal shrinkage rate (150°C/h) ≤5%, and peel strength reaching 2 to 3 times that of similar products, with all performance indicators exceeding those of Japanese products. Therefore, the separator industry is gradually replacing the expensive Japanese products with the cost-effective water-based adhesive from Gaorui Power.

Gaorui Power's founder, Xi Liujiang, clearly stated that for ceramic-coated separators, good heat resistance leads to high moisture residue, and heat resistance and moisture are a natural contradiction. Currently, Gaorui Power has developed the third-generation product, the GR-508 series, with glue heat resistance improved to over 200 degrees Celsius and moisture residue below 0.0005. On this basis, the company will continue to invest technical resources, striving for excellence in the research and development of related products, and will apply more new technological achievements to the market, showcasing the strong capabilities of Chinese manufacturing and Chinese technology in global market competition.
